Pleated Skirt – Cutting & Stitching

Once, we learned the traditional style for bottom wear i.e. straight pant and palazzo pant, and also we learned the western style bottom wear i.e. umbrella skirt.
Right now, we will learn another type of skirt i.e. pleated skirt with body measurements.
Any fabric can be used for making any skirt.
Precisely, the fabric is decided according to which style the skirt is to be made.
Pleated skirt length can be kept up to or above the knee.
This skirt requires 2-2.5m of fabric.
Pleated skirts are made of a little bit of thick fabric like cotton, silk, rayon, etc.

Required Measurements For Pleated Skirt Cutting:

Here is the method to take body measurements.

  • Length – measure from waist till the length to be kept
  • Waist – all-around measurement in the waist area

Method:

  • After taking measurements as written, fold the fabric 2 times i.e. 1 fold.

Steps for a pleated skirt with the figure:

CUTTING METHOD:

  • Let’s take an example with measurements as given below:
    • Length: 20″
    • Waist: 30″
  • For cutting the waist belt in a skirt, take 1/2 of the waist and add 1 to that.
    • Waist belt = 30″/2 = 15+1 = 16″
  • While keeping the belt width 4″, as referenced in the figure(a).
    • Belt width: 4″

  • For the gher(circumference) of the skirt, you have to take 3 times more fabric than the measurement of the belt.
  • If the skirt length is 20″, then the length of the gher(circumference) should be taken by adding 2″ in cutting, as shown in figure(b).
    • Circumference length = 20″+2 = 22″
  • Here 2″ is kept to fold the border at the bottom part of the skirt.
  • Now, for the gher(circumference) width can be kept 3 times the belt.
    • Circumference width = 16″*3= 48″
  • If you want to do more pleats in the skirt, the fabric must be kept 4 times more.

STITCHING METHOD:

  • To stitch the skirt, first point the pleats in the belt and join the gher(circumference) part with the belt.
  • In this skirt, the belt is fixed at the waist.
  • So you have to put the zip on the side.
  • A canvas is inserted into the belt, so the belt part becomes a little tighter.
  • Then bend from below into the gher(circumference).
