Umbrella skirt cutting with measurement
Earlier, we learned traditional style for bottom wear i.e. straight pant and palazzo pant, but now we will learn western style bottom wear i.e skirt.
Of all the skirt styles, here we are going to learn an easy cutting method for an umbrella style short(knee length) skirt with the body measurements.
Any fabric can be used for making any type of skirt.
Precisely, the fabric is decided according to which style the skirt is to be made.
Long, umbrella, or double umbrella skirts are made of fabric like chiffon, silk, rayon etc., while mini skirts or pleated skirts are made of a little bit of thick fabric.
Different types of skirts are made by giving variations in length and fabric
This skirt requires 1.5-2m of fabric.
Required Measurements For Umbrella Skirt Cutting:
Here is the method to take body measurements.
- Length – measure from waist to knee
- Waist – all-around measurement in the waist area
Method:
- As shown in figure(b), fold the cloth 1 time and fold it again into a triangle.
Steps for umbrella skirt cutting with the figure:
- Let’s take an example with measurements as given below:
- Length: 24″
- Waist: 34″
- For the cutting of the waist belt, in belt length measurement add 2″ to the waist.
- Belt length: 34″+2″ = 36″.
- While keeping the belt width 4″ as shown in the figure(a).
- Belt width: 4″
- Take a measurement of 1/4 of the waist and add 0.5″ to either side of the triangle, referring to the figure(b).
- Waist measurement: 34″/4 = 8.5″+0.5″ = 9″
- Take the waist measurement in a triangle in such a way that both sides of the triangle are equal, as shown in the figure (b).
- Now, for the length of the skirt subtract 1 from the total length.
- Total length: 24″-1″ = 23″
- Make sure to keep an equal length throughout the round of the skirt.
- To fold the bottom in an umbrella skirt, do not fold the fabric directly, but fold the bottom in the over-lock stitch, or simply sew a 0.5″ after folding the fabric.
- In this type of umbrella skirt, the waist belt measures the same as the waist, so it is mandatory to put a side zip for perfect fitting.
- If we make a skirt of thin cloth, the lining can also be placed.
- If you want to insert rubber in the belt, add 2″ to the seat measurement of the belt, and the rubber is inserted into the waist measurement.
- Even when cutting gher, take 1/4 of the seat then add 0.5″ of the skirt with rubber, and, i.e. the belt is kept as much.
Other Objectives:
- Similarly, cutting the fabric in 4 folds instead of 2 folds makes a double umbrella gher(circumference) skirt.
- The chaniyo(lehenga) of the umbrella gher(circumference) is also cut in this way, it has more length.
- The skirt can be made long or short to give different looks.
- This short skirt can be paired with a long-sleeve or quarter-sleeve top, shirts, quarter-sleeve shirts or sweaters, etc.

- I hope you like this creative idea to make an umbrella skirt cutting easily.
