Petticoat Cutting Method (6 cuts/kalis)
Previously, we have already learned the cutting methods of straight pant, palazzo pant, dhoti pant, and sharara pant.
We have also learned simple salwar cutting using 2m fabric, simple salwar cutting(part-2) using 2.5m fabric, and full patiala/khajuri salwar cutting.
Today, we will learn the petticoat cutting method (6 cuts/kalis).
2.25-2.5m of cloth is required to make a petticoat.
Mostly, cotton fabric is used for making the petticoat.
Silk or any flexible fabric is also used under the transparent saree.
Required Measurements For Petticoat Cutting Method:
Here 2 measurements are given to measure petticoat.
- Length – from the waist to the floor
- Waist – all-around measurement in the waist area
Method:
- You have to arrange the fabric in 2 folds.
Steps with the figure:
- Let’s take an example with measurements as given below:
- Length: 40″
- Waist: 38″
- 6 cuts are made in the cutting of the petticoat, out of which 4 cuts/kalis are small and 2 cuts/kalis are large.
- Firstly, the belt is removed from the total fabric.
- Belt cutting is done 5″ wide and 3-4″ from the waist.
- Now, referring the figure(a), for belt measurement, take 1/2 of the waist and add 2″ for stitching to that.
- Belt = 38″/2 = 19″+2 = 21″
- After joining the cuts/kalis, the cutting method is done according to its measurement.
- After cutting the belt, arrange the fabric in 2 folds as shown in the figure(b).
- Here we have to cut as much as the length of the kali of the petticoat.
- As much as the length is bent down, the same measurement belt comes in the upper part.
- So if you want to make a 40″ petticoat, keep the length of the kali as 40″.
- Then to get the width of the fabric, measure 1/8 of the waist and add 1″.
- Width = 38″/8 = 4.75″+1 = 5.75″
- Similarly, take 5.75″ from the opposite side and draw a diagonal line, and cut, as explained in below figure(b).
- Hence, 2 large cuts/kalis come out from the fold side and 4 cuts/kalis come out small from the edged side, as drawn in figure(c).
- Then by keeping the large cut/kali in the middle and joining the small cut/kali on both sides, all the kali are joined and the petticoat is prepared by putting a belt on top, refer figure(d).
- Cutting of lining(astar) for one piece or any designer petticoat is also done by this method.
Other Objectives:
- This petticoat is used to wear at the bottom when wearing a saree.
- A designer petticoat of silk or any flexible fabric is also used under the transparent saree.
Conclusion:
- I hope the petticoat cutting method of 6 cuts/kalis will help you to make a comfortable petticoat.
